Goal of six sigma is customer satisfaction. Customer satisfaction means minimizing defect. Out of specification response variable is defect. Defect is undesirable effect. Undesirable effect means, mean is not there where it is supposed to be and standard deviation is high. Therefore, improvement means shifting mean in favorable direction and reducing standard deviation.

Improvement can happen only when we identify potential causes and then major impact causes. Set the major impact causes at optimal level by taking corrective action. To sustain improvement, monitor the improved process with the help of control charts.
